Armando de Lacerda Wing – Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics of Coimbra

During the 8th International Workshop on the History of Speech Communication Research, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a guided visit to the exhibition “Armando de Lacerda Wing – Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics of Coimbra”, located on the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra.

This exhibition is the result of the PHONLAB project Phonetics Laboratory: Coimbra – Harvard. Rethinking 20th-Century Scientific Centres and Peripheries funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, I.P.), in collaboration with the Rectorate of the University of Coimbra, the Science Museum, and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The exhibition explores the history of phonetics in Portugal, with a particular focus on the Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics of Coimbra and its director, Armando de Lacerda. It brings together scientific instruments, archival materials, and oral testimonies to preserve and showcase the Laboratory’s legacy, offering a critical perspective on a largely overlooked chapter in twentieth-century phonetics research.
